Darryl Johnson is the Executive Director of Riverworks Development Corporation (non-profit economic development corporation), Riverworks Business Improvement District #25, and Harambee Neighborhood Improvement #7. Darryl has been with Riverworks for over sixteen years and has been associated with this area for over fifty years. His role is to lead the organizations by implementing all policies and programs, accounting for all funds, meeting with community residents, elected officials and businesses, writing funding proposals, leveraging resources, and managing the real estate market and development programs.
During his tenure with the organizations, Darryl has developed three catalytic projects that are currently owned by the Development Corporation in the Riverworks Center area: Riverworks Commons Shopping Center, Riverworks Lofts, and the Riverworks City Center. The VIBE is an affordable co-working space created by Riverworks in the Riverworks City Center, which provides office space and support services for business startups.
Darryl is currently working on a fourth catalytic project called the 53212 MarketPlace in the Harambee Neighborhood. The 53212 MarketPlace includes a collaborative approach using Creative Placemaking (Arts & Culture), Health, Economic Development, and Equity – in terms of providing opportunities for individuals often excluded from them. Darryl has been involved in numerous projects in the area related to creating public space (Beerline Recreational Trail, neighborhood pocket parks, and open green space for public art). He has helped to attract new companies to Riverworks Center area. These projects accounted for over $25 million in new investment into the area and the creation of more than 90 new jobs.
