Request for Proposal: Riverworks Healthy Neighborhood Art Project 2015 Mission Riverworks Development Corporation’s mission is to promote economic prosperity by providing coordinated resources for residents and businesses in the neighborhoods we serve of Harambee, Riverwest, and the Riverworks Business Improvement Districts. Project Background Riverworks forged a new partnership in 2015 through the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative – a public-private partnership spearheaded by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation and the city of Milwaukee which aims to promote neighborhood confidence by engaging neighbors in building pride and strengthening local real estate markets. As the lead agency for this initiative in the northern regions of the Harambee and Riverwest communities, Riverworks will be working to build on the strengths of these neighborhoods to highlight them as places that people love and are proud of; places that people seek out as their community of choice and where they choose to remain. The Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative is guided by four principles: positive image, sustainable real estate market, good physical conditions and strong social connections. As a lead agency in the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative, we were presented with a unique opportunity to apply for funding for an art project that involves the community in creative and substantive ways. The funder uses an array of evaluation criteria when awarding grants and looks for projects that emphasize the visual arts, target individuals underserved by arts programming, provide evidence of long-term impact and measurable outcomes, and that highlight collaboration involving multiple organizations or artists. This is a unique opportunity for Riverworks to help bring a valuable art project to the neighborhoods we serve, and we are releasing this Request for Proposal in hopes of finding partners to help lead a community developed art project over the summer of 2015. Goals • Create a piece (or coordinated set of pieces) of public art for an outdoor environment working with residents and community stakeholders. • Highlight the idea of bridging/bringing together the Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods. • Incorporate the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative guiding principles into the art project with emphasis on improving physical conditions aesthetically, promoting an image that communicates positive choice and confidence, and strengthening relationships and connections amongst and between neighbors and stakeholders. • The art project should contribute to “placemaking” – a multifaceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces that capitalizes on a local community’s assets, inspiration, and potential. • We hope that this project serves as a catalyst for future projects – i.e. that it sparks something that the community wants to build on in future years. • Project must be located within the target blocks identified in the map (attached). Priority will be given to applications that engage the Beerline Recreational Trail and Holton Street. Artist Eligibility Any artist or team of artists interested in leading a community developed art project to be completed in 2015 may complete a proposal in accordance with the “Application Requirements” section below. Preference will be given to artists residing in or with strong connections to the Harambee and Riverwest neighborhoods. Please e-mail for an application. They are due March 31st. March 18, 2015 More »
