Riverworks Business Improvement District #36

The Riverworks Business Improvement District II #36 is a public-private partnership between the City of Milwaukee and 45 Property Owners that allows businesses and property owners to collectively develop, manage and promote the Riverworks Center business district. To view the area that BID #36 encompasses, click on this Map.

The Riverworks BID II operates three programs that focus on improving the appearance and perception of Riverworks Center.

  • The Public Safety & Appearance program: Performs graffiti removal and sidewalk sweeping for the area.
  • The Marketing & Promotions program: Promote the area as a first class destination for shoppers, business owners and real estate developers.
  • Business and Property Assistance program: Provides façade improvement grants (for things like windows, doors, signage, etc.), fencing improvement grants, and safety and security grants to BID businesses.

The Riverworks BID II is administered by the Riverworks Development Corporation and staffed by Executive Director, Darryl Johnson. You can reach him at darrylj@riverworksmke.org.

Beerline Recreational Trail

The Riverworks BID II has been coordinating the redevelopment of the Beerline Recreational Trail in coordination with RDC staff and the City of Milwaukee for the last two years. Through the support of the BID, a landscaping design plan was created and approved by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for a $200,000 grant. With this funding in place, the City of Milwaukee has a signed contract with a landscaper who is scheduled to carry out the plan by August 2010.

Holton/Keefe Streetscape Project

The Riverworks BID II will be working with the City of Milwaukee to implement streetscape improvements beginning in spring 2010. The Holton/Townsend intersection where the Beerline Recreational Trail crosses will be the location of construction with bumpouts, colored/stamped concrete, and a new bus shelter from Clear Channel. The BID was able to piggyback on the Keefe Avenue repaving project and get special improvements approved - including decorative crosswalks between Humboldt and 7th Street as well as bumpouts at Keefe and Richards.

These major projects coupled with small aesthetic improvements like landscaping, signage, trash receptacles, etc as well as the simultaneous improvements along the Beerline Trail, and BID 36 property and business owners will start seeing major improvements.
